2005 Women's Soccer Players of the Week

November 7, 2005
Jen Marino, Bates
(Freshman, Forward - Methuen, Mass.)
Marino netted the game-winning goal in the second overtime to give Bates a 2-1 victory over Tufts in the NESCAC Women's Soccer Championship on Sunday. The goal was Marino's fourth of the season, and first game-winner this year, giving the Bobcats their first-ever NESCAC Women's Soccer Championship.

Ann Zeigler, Bowdoin
(Sophomore, Midfield/Forward - Washington, D.C.)
Zeigler scored four goals in two games over the weekend, including both game-winners, as the Polar Bears claimed the third seed in the NESCAC Tournament and advanced to the semifinals for the sixth-straight season. Zeigler collected a hat trick in the season finale against Wesleyan on Saturday before scoring the game's second goal and assisting on another in Bowdoin's 5-1 victory over Middlebury on Sunday.

Lesley Pruzansky, Amherst
(Junior, Midfield - Saratoga, Calif.)
Pruzansky led her club to three wins last week, all in NESCAC action, notching a goal and three assists. She had the assist on the game-winner in a 3-0 victory at Connecticut College on Wednesday followed by scoring the opening goal in a 4-1 decision over Wesleyan on Saturday, and rounded out the week on Sunday with both assists in the 2-1 come-from-behind victory over Middlebury.

Liza Benson, Colby
(Junior, Goalkeeper - Orchid, Fla.)
Benson earned two shutouts in a 1-0-1 week for the Mules. Against St. Joseph's (ME) on Wednesday, Benson made five saves in a 1-0 victory. Saturday, Benson denied a total of 14 Amherst attempts as the Mules and the Jeffs battled to a scoreless draw. Benson has allowed just eight goals in 10 appearances and has five shutouts so far this season.

Annie Ross, Tufts
(Junior, Goalkeeper - Newton, Mass.)
Ross posted back-to-back clean sheets with 180 scoreless minutes of work against Brandeis and Bowdoin last week, making 11 saves. After only needing to make one save in a 2-0 victory against Brandeis on Wednesday, Ross battled adverse weather conditions to make 10 saves against Bowdoin on Saturday during a 3-0 Jumbos win.

Ashley Pfaff, Middlebury
(Freshman, Forward - Charlotte, Vt.)
Trailing nationally-ranked Bowdoin 1-0, the rookie forward Pfaff went on a tear for the Panthers, scoring three straight goals to give her squad a 3-1 lead before an eventual 3-2 victory. Pfaff now leads her squad in goals with five markers so far this season.

Kim Alexander, Bates
(Junior, Forward - Cumberland, Maine)
Alexander tallied four goals, all in NESCAC action, as the Bobcats rolled to a 3-0 week overall. On Saturday against Connecticut College, Alexander found the back of the net twice, helping her squad to a 6-1 decision. On Sunday, Alexander matched her scoring output from the previous outing, garnering two goals in a 7-1 victory against Trinity. To date, Alexander leads the Bobcats in scoring with five goals and an assist, and is second in the NESCAC in goals per game (1.20).

Ariel Samuelson, Tufts
(Senior, Forward - Newton, Mass.)
Samuelson tied a Jumbos' record by scoring all three goals in a 3-0 victory over NESCAC foe Middlebury on Saturday. She also had an assist in Tufts' 3-2 decision over Wheaton on Wednesday for a seven-point week (3-1-7). Samuelson is the first Tufts player to score three goals in a game since 1999.

Anna Shapell, Bowdoin
(Senior, Goalkeeper - Cape Elizabeth, Maine)
Anna Shapell paced a Polar Bear defense that stonewalled opponents over the weekend, allowing no goals in 157 minutes worth of work. Saturday, Shapell played 67 minutes of scoreless soccer between the posts in a 3-0 victory over Bridgewater State. Shapell followed it up on Sunday with seven saves in a 2-0 whitewash of Babson.
