HARTFORD, Conn. – The Williams College men’s and women’s outdoor track and field teams won their fourth consecutive New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) Outdoor Championship titles at the 2004 Championship Meet held today at Jessee/Miller Field on the campus of Trinity College. The wins mark the 12th title in 13 years for the Williams men and the ninth in the last 10 seasons for the Eph women.

In the men’s meet, Williams scored 158 points, followed by Bates in second with 129.5 points, edging Tufts, which had 128 points in third place. Williams ran away with the women’s meet, totaling 247 points, while Tufts placed second with 141.5 points, and Middlebury came in third with 118 points.

Carter Hamill, of Amherst, clocked 17:02.78 in the women’s 5,000-meter run to break the 25-year old meet record of 17:03.70 that had been set by Karin Vonberg, of Middlebury, in 1979. Two records fell at the hands of Bates Bobcats in the women’s throwing events, as Elizabeth Wanless set a new mark in the shot put with a heave of 15.78 m and teammate Kelly Godsey broke the NESCAC hammer throw record with a toss of 58.50 m. Wanless broke her own record of 14.72 m set last spring, and Godsey shattered the record set by Brenda Start, of Williams, of 49.99 m.

No meet records fell on the men’s side for the second year in a row, but Xavier Garcia, of Colby, won the 100- and 200-meter dashes with times of 10.87 and 21.86, respectively. Tufts’ Fred Jones took first in both the long jump at 6.44 m and the triple jump at 14.20 m. Kaitlin Fulton won the women’s 100 meters and the 200 meters for Williams with times of 12.27 and 25.34, respectively, while Colby’s Karina Ummah captured the 100-meter hurdles title with a time of 15.33 and the triple jump with a distance of 11.91 m. Sophomore Chris Orr posted the lone first-place finish for the host Bantams, recording a time of 54.26 in the 400-meter hurdles in the men’s meet.
