Williams Downs Christopher Newport in NCAA Men's Tennis Tournament

EWING, N.J. - Williams men’s tennis wasted no time in getting the ball the rolling on their NCAA tournament journey, and easily took care of Christopher Newport University on the Trinity College of New Jersey campus, 5-0.

As the top seed in the regional, the eighth-ranked Ephs have upped their overall record to 16-3 and will face off against the host school in the regional final tomorrow at noon.

Williams opened with three quality doubles matches, and then took care of business quickly in singles play to tally the two points necessary for the victory. Gary Simonette defeated Jacob Braig at court three, 6-2, 6-0 while Rick Devlin dominated at court six in a 6-0, 6-0 result.

“We’re [Williams] happy with how we played today,” said Williams’ head coach David Donn. “We played well in doubles and that’s encouraging for our team, and it really set the tone for the rest of the match.”

The Ephs will need to continue playing solid tennis at doubles if they hope to advance deep into the tournament. Williams will next face off against TCNJ, vying for a spot in the NCAA Quarterfinals.
