2009 Men's Lacrosse Players of the Week

Russ Follansbee, Wesleyan
(Senior, Attacker - Deerfield, Mass.)
Follansbee collected 11 points on eight goals and three assists to lead the Cardinals to the 2009 NESCAC Men’s Lacrosse Championship, the program’s first conference crown. During Saturday’s 15-14 overtime victory against top-seeded Middlebury, Follansbee netted five goals. He followed on Sunday with three goals and three assists in a 14-10 win against Tufts. Follansbee finished the championship with 16 points, just two shy of the all-time tournament record.

Jake McCampbell, Bowdoin
(Sophomore, Goalkeeper - Medfield, Mass.)
McCampbell was solid in net for the Polar Bears over three wins last week, posting a 7.33 goals against average and a .656 save percentage. McCampbell recorded 42 total saves, an average of 14 a game, including 18 in Bowdoin’s 11-8 victory over Trinity in the quarterfinals of the 2009 NESCAC Men’s Lacrosse Championship on Sunday, holding the Bantams scoreless for a 34-minute stretch in the contest. McCampbell currently leads the league in save percentage at an even .600.

Mike Stone, Middlebury
(Senior, Midfielder - Boston, Mass.)
Stone continued his torrid scoring pace for the Panthers, tallying 11 goals along with an assist to help his team go 2-0 last week. During an 18-15 win at Skidmore on Tuesday evening, Stone netted a personal-best seven goals. He followed on Saturday with four goals and an assist in a 12-11 win at Trinity, burying the game-winning goal with 24 seconds left in the contest to guarantee Middlebury the top seed in the 2009 NESCAC Men’s Lacrosse Championship. Stone now has 26 goals in his last five games.

Harper Cullen, Trinity
(Junior, Attacker - Rehoboth Beach, Del.)
Cullen led the Bantams in scoring during a 2-0 week, tallying nine goals. On Wednesday at Eastern Conn. St., Cullen scored all of his game-high four goals in the third quarter, leading Trinity back from a 6-2 halftime deficit for a 7-6 advantage heading into the fourth that the Bantams would not relinquish. In a key 11-6 win at Bates on Saturday, Harper paced his squad once again with five more scores. He also contributed three ground balls during the week.

Mike Stone, Middlebury
(Senior, Attacker - Boston, Mass.)
Stone tallied seven goals and two assists while also scooping up three ground balls in road victories over Amherst and Bowdoin last week. On Wednesday at Amherst, Stone had a goal and two assists in a 13-11 win. He followed on Saturday with six goals as the Panthers edged Bowdoin 14-13.
   
Mike Borrero, Wesleyan
(Senior, Goalkeeper - Bayport, N.Y.)
Borrero posted a .773 save percentage and a 2.86 goals against average over a pair of Cardinal wins last week, stopping 17 of 22 shots during 105 minutes of work. In victories against Trinity (9-3) and Colby (11-3), Borrero backboned a streak of at least 32 minutes in each game during which the opponent was held scoreless.

Pete Smith, Middlebury
(Junior, Attacker - Wilton, Conn.)
Smith had a 10-point week as the Panthers went 2-0, earning victories over Washington & Lee and Colby. During Tuesday’s decision over Washington & Lee, Smith assisted on six of Middlebury’s 12 goals in a 12-10 win. He followed on Saturday at home with a goal and three assists for a 15-10 Panther victory against the Mules. Smith also scooped up nine ground balls during the week. He leads the Panthers and is second in the NESCAC with 20 assists through six games.

Whit McCarthy, Colby
(Junior, Attacker - Darien, Conn.)
McCarthy collected nine goals and two assists during a 2-0 week for the Mules, as he played a part in 11 of Colby’s 18 goals last week. McCarthy started the week with four of his team’s seven tallies in a 7-6 win over Wheaton on Tuesday. He then added five goals and an assist in Saturday’s 11-8 decision over Trinity. Two of McCarthy’s five markers came during a 6-0 run during the fourth quarter that gave Colby the victory. He leads the Mules in scoring with 17 goals and six assists for 23 points.

Clem McNally, Tufts
(Senior, Attacker - Far Hills, N.J.)
McNally posted 12 goals and an assist over two victories for the Jumbos last week. On Tuesday at Lasell, McNally scored five goals during a 22-8 Tufts victory. He followed on Saturday against Colby with seven tallies - tying a single-game career-high - and one assist during a 14-9 win over the Mules. Two of McNally’s seven goals came during a 5-0 run to start the fourth quarter that turned a 9-7 advantage into a 14-7 lead.

Jake McCampbell, Bowdoin
(Sophomore, Goalkeeper - Medfield, Mass.)
In his first career start, McCampbell stopped 18 shots to lead the Polar Bears past Wesleyan 4-3 on Saturday. The 18 saves were the most by a Bowdoin goalkeeper in a game since 2004.
   
D.J. Hessler, Tufts
(Sophomore, Attacker - Monkton, Md.)
Hessler had 10 points with four goals and six assists during the Jumbos’ 15-6 victory over Amherst. Hessler scored three goals and added two assists during the team’s 9-0 run over the second and third quarters. He also scooped up five ground balls.
