BRASELTON, Ga. - The Woodlands Course at the Elan Resort was not as kind to the Williams men's golf team on Wednesday as the Chateau Course was on Tuesday, as the Ephs finished tied for 24th place with Washington & Jefferson after day two at the 2008 NCAA Golf Championship. Williams missed the cut as the top 23 teams advance after the first two days of the tournament.
St. John Fisher College leads the tournament with a team score of 596, while Williams and Washington & Jefferson College tied for 24th with a score of 648.
An opening round of 313 put the
Ephs in 13th place after day one, but today's round got away from
the Ephs quickly and they were unable to get back on track and
finished with a 335.
"It was just one of those humbling days on a golf course where no
one other than Matt Felser could get it going," noted Eph head
coach Rick Pohle. "When you're going through this kind of
experience it seems like it is only affecting you, but a lot of
teams had trouble today on a difficult course. It's not the result
that we wanted and the kids are disappointed, but this is an
experience we can build on."
Junior Matt Felser was the top performer on the day for the purple
as he carded a four over par 75. Felser racked up 11 pars and two
birdies and was the lone Eph to crack 80.
Junior Tyler Zara chipped in with an 83 on the strength of eight
pars. First year Jake Wagner shot an 86.
Senior co-captain Brendan Conley shot a 91 in his last collegiate
appearance and first year Drew Murray struggled all day long and
carded a 96.
"We may look into different ways to prepare the team in years to
come, but right now we're just focused on getting the kids back to
campus as soon as we can so they can finish up their papers and
exams," said Pohle.
